I N V E R S I O N

S O:

1.The weather was so bad that they went home.///

So bad was the weather that they went home.

2.The weather conditions became so bad that they went home.

So bad did the weather conditions become that they went home.

S U C H:

1. His anger was such that he broke all the plates.

Such was his anger that he broke all the plates.

2. He had such a wonderful sense of humour that everybody laughed of him.

Such a wonderful sense of humour did he have that everybody laughed at him.

The play is so popular that it is impossible to get the tickets.

So popular is the play...

Such is the popularity of the play...

After such we use only nouns; after so we use only adjectives.

Never rarely

I have never/ rarely had so much free time.

Never/ rarely have i had so much free time.

Seldom

One seldom sees such things.

Seldom does one see such things.

HARDLY...WHEN

SCARCELY...WHEN + PAST PERFECT!!!

I had scarcely entered my office when the telephone rang.

Scarcely had i entered my office when ...

I had hardly left the office when I fainted.

Hardly had I left the office when...

NO SOONER...THAN + PAST SIMPLE/ PAST PERFECT

No sooner had the rain stopped than the sun come out.

No sooner did the rain stopped than ...

ONLY+later, after, then, when + PAST SIMPLE

Only later/ after/ then/ when the guests had left did we begin to clean up.

When ‘only’ means ‘jedyny ‘- nie ma inwersji.

ONLY+ by, with, in

Only by telling the truth, can you escape punishment.

Only with me, will you feel really safe.

On no account- w zadnym wypadku

Under no circumstances- w zadnych okolicznosciach

On no conditions- pod zadnym warunkiem

In no way- w żaden sposób

NOT UNTIL + PAST SIMPLE

Not until I got off the bus, did I realize I had left my purse there.
